How to get email notification of posts.

Post  henridecat on Fri Jan 09, 2009 9:47 am

This is one possibility, but the solution isn't ideal:

1) Select each forum in turn.
2) Near the bottom of the display click the "Start Watching Forum" link, as illustrated below.
3) When a post is made to the forum you will get an email.

Click on image for full size.

If you ever want to stop watching a forum then click the profile link on the main menu and select the "Topic being watched" tab, where there is an option to unwatch topics.

Unfortunately there are a lot of forums and new forums can be created without your knowledge: but see below the notes about RSS, which may be the better option.

I've discovered that another setting has to be enabled!

1) Select 'profile', in the middle of the top menu.
2) Select the 'preferences' tab.
3) Change option to Allow members to contact me by email : to By a website form

The original instructions above (now corrected) were incorrect as the watch has to be set on the sub-forum being watched, which is not terribly practical.

Instead I'm trailing an RSS feed which I hope can be setup to be used to produce email digests using a free 3rd party service:

1) Go to http://www.feedmyinbox.com/
2) Enter http://forum.kriegsspiel.org.uk/feed/ as the website url.
3) and your email address.
4) Accept the confirmation and .....I hope it will work...

If anyone has a better scheme do please SHOUT!

How to get email notification of posts.

Post  nichtstadt on Sat Apr 04, 2009 7:23 pm

I have done the RSS thing and got a message saying that an e-mail was being sent to me. When I clicked on it I would be up and running. That was an hour ago and nothing has arrived so far. I'll keep you posted. The idea sounds a good one if it works.

I signed up about 10 hours ago. Nothing received yet, although I know Andy has been posting.

I've created a different RSS feed which produces an email digests when a new post is made:

1) Go to http://www.feedmyinbox.com/
2) Enter http://www.kriegsspiel.org.uk/rss.php as the website url.
3) and your email address.
4) Accept the confirmation and thats it.....

I have been trying this for a week and it seems to work adequately...

If you had previously setup the other feed address then you might as well cancel it.

Right. Done that. It was certainly easy to do. Thanks Richard.

I'll report back on whether it works.

E-mail notification of posts

Post  nichtstadt on Sun Apr 26, 2009 11:47 am

Richard,
Thanks very much. I installed the feed and it seems to work fine. In my case there was a delay of some hours between pasting in the link and then receiving confirmation that it had been activated so be aware you may need to be a liitle patient.

That's to be expected, the 3rd party service will only check for updates once every 24hrs.
