Manoeuvres or Practical Observations on the Art of War- Major Young
This is probably old hat to many/most of you, but some time ago I remember somebody asking (not sure if it was here or elsewhere) about precursors to the Reisswitz game, and this turned up via a TMP forum - http://books.google.com/books?id=GIMDAAAAQAAJ&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q=&f=false
Fascinating for me - the first page identifies a seller of 'gaming' pieces but our interest lie in p.279 onwards in the Google books ref - whereby young gentlemen in ill disciplined corps are recommended to play out the manoeuvres of their troops on a table draw upon to resemble the ground.
Worth a look if, like me you have never come across this work before.

Belated thanks for posting this Guy. Very interesting.
I certainly hadn't seen it before, and it does indeed look very much like a proto-kriegsspiel c1770.
