Online Interface for Kriegsspiel

Post  Polorutz on Thu Feb 25, 2010 10:10 pm

Hi guys,

Allow me to introduce myself, my name's Mariano, I am a PHP Developer living in England at the moment.

I've been a gamer for as long as I can remember, I am currently playing lot of 19th century based games and I came across Kriegsspiel when reading about combat simulations.

I joined the forum after searching for online Kriegsspiel games, there appears to be none.

I have been thinking about developing an Online interface for Kriegsspiel using PHP and jQuery for my own enjoyment. Totally free of course.

So far my idea would be to create a system whereby 3 players can log into a single game, one umpire and the 2 players of course. The umpire would be able to upload the map and he could even give 2 different maps to each of the players, now, given that I don't want to complicate things, what I would do would be basically to make the umpire the omnipotent being, he'll have 3 different interfaces, one for his picture (where all the units could be displayed regardless of fog of war, etc), and one for each player, where the umpire can display units according to the picture each player should get.

The System would have a real time chat enabled or maybe a messaging system.

I need some ideas from you experienced kriegsspiel players, if you could have anything in the interface, what would you want?

-Mariano Ripoll, Developer.

I did a bit of work with that idea using PHP/SQL, but only got so far.

Classic mistake, I didn't keep it simple enough and got bogged down as things I'd only half thought through became too complex.

Have you a 'concept' you could summarise, e.g what functionality are you considering, is it real time or turn ordered etc.

Well I really hope you can make this work. Many enthusiasts are just 'armchair kriegsspielers' for lack of local opponets, so there is definitely a need.

Mariano at al.,

Please see http://forum.kriegsspiel.org.uk/email-kriegsspiels-f7/real-time-kriegspiel-online-t118.htm

I am very interested in this concept, partly because it may be a good earner! I have $900 on account with an American software development firm but I need to clarify my ideas. In structural terms I favour a standard CMS (Drupal?) with modifications. I have a good script to manage the membership aspects.

If there are any admin. people reading this, I suggest that a new forum may be suitable. Any commercial discussions may require a private forum however.

Cheers,

Richard
