Hello from a new guy

Post  Guest on Sun Oct 18, 2015 9:03 pm

Hello everyone,
I was wondering how I could get added into the campaign. It has been a little while since I've played against other human players, but would like to get involved again if possible. I'll probably make a few mistakes but who says battles aren't won by some one taking a little initiative lol. Thanks in advance

Hi there

You get added to the campaign by showing your interest here;)

Are you a Kriegspiel player looking for a PBEM campaign or (and?) do you own Scourge of War - Waterloo and are interested in the online MP battles?

I'm happy for anyone to join the campaign but SoW MP players are more welcome than non-players as we seem to have a shortage of generals at our battles recently with so many of us now having busy working or studying or family lives with not so much time for a 3 or 4 hour online game session once a week.

I have a few gaps in my Spanish list of active generals so would prefer to slot you in there. There are a couple of French slots open but I know one of them will be filled for sure soon (and is therefore reserved). The Anglo-Portuguese Army is fully commanded so no openings there. There is also an open position for the Spanish Central Junta which could use a player and would thus be a species of overall command slot (except lacking any actual military authority!) The role would however have some clout as regards replacements, reinforcements and supply logistics.

Where does your interest lie?

Oh - and welcome to the KS forums as well.

Yes I do own Scourge of War - Waterloo and I do play MP. I started playing MP in SOW - Gettysburg but took a long break and have decided to get back into it. I will be happy wherever you need me. I might not be able to make all of the battles but should be able to since winter is coming up and my schedule may thing a little. I would like to maybe command a large brigade or just a regular division. Is there anything I need to read in addition to what is in the forums I can already see. I'd also like to ask if you can explain the Central Spanish Junta and what it entails.
Thank You

In terms of commands on the strategic map players command corps or armies. In our MP games you can command whatever you are comfortable with. If your map command is involved in a battle you would be the C-in-C in the MP game but only if you wanted - it can be a daunting task, I myself am not a fan of such responsibility - if you do not command in-game I would ask you to at least write out a battle plan since you'd be the person most intimate with the overall larger picture surrounding the battle your command finds itself in.

The Junta Central is a political gathering of senior nobles, men of worth and other big hats. It is led by two men, one who focuses on civil issues and another whose current job is to focus on military issues. The Central Junta player would mainly wear the hat of that person.

It usually sits in Madrid but that is not possible currently so it presently sits in Seville. It is a civilian council and usually supports the King and his ministers and is their executive arm of a kind. I suppose it is a type of parliament though that analogy is not correct since Spain has a cortes that serves that function. The current assembly is an emergency council set up to try to serve Spain's interests during the war. each Spanish province has a good deal of political autonomy and a Provincial Junta sits in the capital city of every province. The Junta Central has representatives of each Provincial Junta on its numbers, plus several extra from the Junta of Andalucia, Spain's richest and most powerful province and co-incidentally the one currently most distant from the French invaders.

The political, economic and military heart of Spain in the conflict lies in the Seville-Cadiz region and it is here that reserve armies are being raised and almost all British allied supplies and equipment arrive.

In game terms the Junta Central would try to co-ordinate the several Spanish armies to achieve the nation's overall war aims. It is however a civilian body, and does not have full authority over the army. It does however, by nature of its many functions, have control over the supply of money, military equipment, food and replacement soldiers and new-raised units so it can wield a good deal of influence in getting the generals to do as it asks. This arrangement needs to be one of co-operation however if possible, but in the cases of some generals it is known that their politics does NOT align with that of the Junta Central, so there will be frictions.

By the way, if it wasn't already clear by now there is unlimited scope for meta-gaming in this campaign - it isn't just pushing counters around a map and fighting the resulting battles Wink

The Junta Central player is directly responsible for:

1) Ensuring supplies flow to Spain's armies via supply depots and other centres
2) All of Spain's garrison forces in many towns, ports, fortresses and cities
3) Raising new units - I have a system in place to regulate this
4) Sending replacement men to existing units (somewhat problematical due to the fluid situation and the decentralised nature of Spain's military)
5) Diplomatic relations with the British
6) Constructing an overall strategy and requesting her armed forces to carry this out
7) Sending any imported British equipment and uniforms to existing or new armies

The person playing the Junta Central would be able to take up a command of any size they were comfortable with in any of the MP battles as well.

I feel that it may be best if I start out just as a general and not on the Junta. The Junta does seem like it would be fun after I learn the ropes of how this all works and such. I am assuming that all battles are played from HITS and that there is a teamspeak for all of the commanders to use in and out of game. I could be wrong in that assumption though.

We use HITS at 10 yds radius with all orders by courier and all games are silent with communications via in-game courier Wink

We only talk if there are technical problems or scenario-specific rules queries.

Being a Kriegspiel group we try to go with the most immersive and realistic settings the game gives so we get the densest fog of war. It isn't to everyone's taste but it is a great leveller of different player skills (which really count for much less in this environment) and the tension is much higher.

You should join us for a casual/stand-alone game or two co-op vs the AI before you try a campaign game just to get used to the HITS and couriers environment.

I have a Spanish command that needs a player asap and I'll send you the details tomorrow.

I have played HITS and Couriers before it has just been awhile. If you would rather me join you in a game before taking a campaign command I understand though.

The campaign moves quite slowly so I will get you involved in it asap, and the map side of it is quite separate from the MP battles. You could try to join us for an SoW game on Wednesday, Friday or Saturday this week. If you can make one of those days at 20:00 UK time / 21:00 CET / 15:00 EST a couple of us will be there to let you have a relaxing shakedown game. We probably have a campaign game on Sunday this week.
