Worth a look ...

Post  Charmead on Fri Mar 25, 2016 7:16 pm

Live fire of Civil War artillery piece from point of view of target (you see smoke in distance and hear the inbound projectile) as well as artillery crew (the latter isn't as good, hard to see where round hit) ... pretty good accuracy.

Fantastic, especially the noises. With some sampling, filtering and editing we'd have some superb sounds for SoW out of that.

You see this soft puff of smoke and what sounds like a little thunder way in the distance and then ... wow ... wakes you up

The sound of what appears to be fragments of shell casing whirling past the microphone is amazing. You can tell how these sounds got the description from witnesses that they "sounded like the buzzing of a thousand angry hornets" or words to that effect.

Do these shells have percussion fuses? They appear to burst where they land. I thought percussion fuses were a later invention.

Pat, thanks for sharing.  That is both terrifying and fascinating.  Surprising accurate by amateurs, especially at 800 or 1000 yards.  Can only imagine what seasoned veterans could do.

There were both percussion and concussion fuses in the Civil War:
