2D or not 2D?

I've just posted on the topic of making General Staff a 2D or a 3D game with screen shots displaying the pros and cons of both arguments.

I am very much for 2D, the 3D map doesn't look too nice, and the unit blocks may have clip problems with different terrain heights.

I also prefer the 2D. Have you thought of half and half solution? When I use to run Kriegsspiel I used Irregualr 2mm troop blocks on proper sized bases with the 2D maps and it gave a nice effect

I am experimenting now trying to find a way to display the troop blocks in a pleasing pseudo-3D way.
