Battle of Eylau In Several Parts

Post  Uncle Billy on Tue Feb 14, 2017 5:14 pm

I'm going to try something a little different for our next few games. We are going to fight the battle of Eylau in several stages. Like the recent Battle of Posen, each piece will cover only a small part of the overall battle. Where applicable, the results of one of these parts may influence the battle in an adjacent part of the field. Casualties will carry over where that is important.

Historically, visibility was poor and the snow was a meter deep. Don't expect the normal advance warning of danger or rapid movement of units. As we will be using historic division and corps compositions, the size of these units may be larger than people are used to or comfortable handling. This is deliberate so as to encourage a tighter control of only a few units at a time and keep a larger portion of troops as a reserve. Trying to fight all your forces at once, even with the AI helping will likely fail since the ground being fought over is of limited size. Some units may not be allowed to move until a certain amount of time has passed.

The opening part of the battle will be fought on Wednesday at the usual time, 14:00 EST, 19:00 GMT. We 'll need a minimum of 5 players, 6 would be even better.

Sounds good. I think we need new ideas injected into our games.

Whenever I load the Poland Eylau map, it crashes.

Does anyone else get this?

There's a few graphic files that cause it, although the last was just:

Yes, there is an error in one of the vegetation sprites. I have a corrected csv file for the map and will distribute it prior to the game today.

Thanks Kevin

I see your plan. There was a severe blizzard which prevented both sides from scouting the terrain in advance. That csv file would have been useful to either side back in 1807, particularly Marshal Augereau Very Happy

We'll play part 3 of the Battle of Eylau Wednesday at the usual time, 14:00 EST, 19:00 GMT. The matter is becoming desperate for the French. Where's Davout and Ney?

Those comments mean the Russkies will get smashed this time!

Kevin, any chance you could post up a summary of what happened in battle II? It would be good to know what is going on elsewhere on the battlefield.

Though.. of course if these events are happening simultaneously, no-one would have a clear idea.

I had a very quiet time on the Russian right, hardly anybody disturbed my siesta. My thanks to Monsieur Napoleon for that.

lol!

I do not think Historically the Russians would have moved the force that you had protecting the stuck in the snow guns because of your tactical position and the strategic value of the guns. Not to mention the chance that one of Kevins wandering AI DIV was not enroute to pick on us more to the North North East of Eylau. The troops you did commit Kept the Fr bullies from picking on my glorious Russian troops worse then they did.

That was a body count and then some. From my vantage point of the fight all I could see was more men taking a siesta then standing and fighting.

Although some of our recent games are just the four of us the intensity and challenge is pretty awesome. Kind of a 2v2 chess game.

Can't wait for Part IV.

It was one of the better fights we've had in a while. With such limited visibility, it was impossible to tell how the battle was going. That did match the historic accounts of the fighting in that sector. As I mentioned after the game, in the real battle, almost no squares were formed due to the visibility. In addition, there was little musket fire. Rather, almost all the infantry action was with the bayonet. Another result of the snowstorms, I imagine. I guess I should have limited the visibility even more.

I did like having the guns frozen in place. That added a completely different aspect to fighting these battles. The French infantry had to get amongst the guns and kill off the artillerymen before they themselves were cut to ribbons. That added a certain urgency to the attack. The division that did the dirty work, Heudelet's, still suffered 38% of its casualties from the infernal Russian guns.

It might be the fourth course of the Eylau feast, which I think is cheese and biscuits.
