Army-level LAN games

Post  Martin on Fri Apr 06, 2012 4:18 pm

My youngest will be home from university shortly, together with one of his friends. They were the first guys I played MP with last year. But they've both been deep into coursework and exams since Xmas, so have not been active in our weekday games.

I'm thinking that if we are all on the same home wireless LAN, we could perhaps try a very large MP battle as an experiment. Our internet connection is only about 4.5 meg, but I've read somewhere that is not an issue for local LANs, and that the only constraining factor would be our pc specs.

Is that actually correct though?

Yes, a LAN is usually a 100Mb connection between PCs, at least it was in the days when I had a wired one, not sure about wireless.

Does that mean it's effectively 100 divided by 3 if three of us play? Or 100 anyway?

Either way it's still a lot better than 4.5 though. Thanks.

If you have an Ethernet connection for your LAN, then that will give you the best chance for an army-level game - or any battle with large numbers of troops etc. Try to have your Ethernet cable six feet (ca. 2 meters) or less, also.

No, the network has a 100Mb capacity. Its not reduced by the number of users and yes, you'l find it a lot faster than the internet!

Ike is correct, I was talking about an Ethernet cable as well, a wired network with a hub. What have you got at home?

We've got a router connected to a BT phone socket by cable. The socket is a special one so you don't need to use a filter. All our PCs have a wireless link to that.

Sorry, I have no idea how quick a wireless network would be. It would run at the limited of your router. Its possible wireless networks have got better in recent years. Whenever I used to host LAN parties we'd use cables and plug the machines together with an Ethernet network.

You are still almost certainly going to have more bandwidth than playing over the internet though.
