G/burg Thursday 29th November at 19.30 UK Time

Post  Martin on Thu Nov 29, 2012 3:09 pm

Short notice I know, but I can play today, if anyone else is interested. Will go into T/S at 19.30 pm UK time and see who's there.

I can host, and particularly if Hays & Digby are around would like to try, if only on a test basis, to see if my earlier problems hosting them still exist.

I can be there!

Played a SP game on Trevallion station yesterday and I'd forgotten what a pretty map this is!

I was unable to host Digby and he was unable to host me. We are wondering whether this has something to do with port-forwarding. Digby has done this, but I never have, so could there be an incompatability there?

OTOH we have been told that, since the move to Matrix, there is no need for port-forwarding by the host. And I am able to host Jeff, who has implemented port-forwarding. I can also host several others whom I don't believe have done so.

I don't think there's any problem with my connection now. It's in the range 30-40 meg depending on time of day, and very stable according to the graphs on speedtest.net. I have low ping, low jitter, and no packet loss.

It's all very confusing. Does anyone have any ideas?

In theory, you should not need port forwarding any longer. In practice, the host does need to do it. Is Digby sure his port is open? If he has more than one computer plugged into his router and the router has been turned off at some point, his computer may not have the same local IP address. His port may no longer be open.

Anyone who wants to see if they have their router configured properly should run this piece of freeware: PFPortChecker

It will tell you if your port is open for that computer.

But a week ago I successfully hosted for 3 other players, so how did I do that?
