How do I get started?

Post  Richard on Tue Jan 15, 2013 10:13 am

Hi everyone,

I am thinking of buying SoW but I have never used it and I have little idea of playing online.

There don't seem to be any threads for newcomers (though I may be wrong of course) so I would appreciate some advice.

Thanks ...

Richard
PS I may get 'Histwar' as well, or whatever it is called.

Hi Richard,

First download the demo here xxx (I can't post links apparently)
And try the game.

This group (KriegsSpiel) plays the game in Headquarters In The Saddle-mode, which is an advanced mode.

The GCM group (xxx i can't post links) organises HITS-mp games where new players can take introductory brigade command.

For Kriegsspiel games, I read in several threads, that some HITS experience is required, so best play some brigadier-HITS-games first.

Richard,

You'd probably be best served by trying the GCM first -- 100 yards from the saddle as compared to the two yards these guys play. After you get some experience, jump into a Hits game.

Both are great fun.

www.sowmp.com for the GCM.

Most GCM games have open communication, so your teammates can "coach" you through your first few battles. The Hits guys play with communication by courier only (or whisper keys on TS if you're close).

The Hits games are great fun, but you need a little battlefield time under your belt before you dive in.

Oh yeah. . . buy the game. You won't regret it. Other than the lost time in the real world you will most definitely experience.

I agree - which is why I ration myself to once per week.

There is no more authentic experience at battlefield command as far as I know. Which is why you should get it, if that's your cup of tea!

Thanks everyone. I have bought & installed the software now.

My laptop may not be fast enough however and I have also got stuck on the second tutorial - I can't see the objective, or it keeps moving!

I expect that I will catch up next week.

Glad you took the plunge, Richard

Is your laptop your main gaming computer?

I know some fellas play online using a laptop but, what I understand from the forums, a dedicated graphics card is preferable.

Still, there are some graphics settings which will speed up performance, particularly the trees percentage visible. Turning down uniform quality will also help and reducing tree & object draw distance also helps.

In HITS (Headquarters in the Saddle) settings ( observe posts here on the Custom settings we use for MP) the graphics settings can be reduced a fair bit, without spoiling the look. Most players turn down some of the said settings for MP games, anyway.

From what I understand, and what I have found, having ample RAM is essential for bigger battles. The advanced AI that is required for each Div, Brig and regiment to act puts a bigger burden on your system than some games. 4gig will work well, in my experience. A 64 bit OS will allow more RAM to be utilised ie >3

Some players recommend using GameBooster to free up some more Ram etc.

Thanks for the tips, Greg. I don't really want to get a m/c just for games!
