Chancellorsville your opinion?

Chancellorsville your opinion?

Post  Father General on Tue Feb 05, 2013 11:15 pm

How many of you have Chancellorsville?

Is it worth it?

Does it add a lot of value to what we already have?

I intend to make the buy if for no other reason to support NSD, however, my timing of the buy will depend on how much value you feel it adds.

How are the scenarios and maps?

Same features or improved?

I have it and like it, although there hasn't been much opporunity to play more than a handful of SP games on it. For MP it has been difficult to play to date because there always seems to be the odd player who doesn't have it.

The maps have a very different look from Gburg & Antietam. I like them but have heard them called the entire range from "beautiful" to "ugly." IMO they do an outstanding job of recreating the aura of the Wilderness. In a few situations the game pathing has been difficult, but I don't have enough experience to offer an informed opinion on whether this is a widespread problem. The roads in C-ville work better than the they did with the initial release of Antietam. There are a few new terrain types and the breastworks/abatis defenses are killers. HITS play is/would be difficult especially in the western maps because of the Wilderness. Some will think this a problem, but there can be little doubt of its realism. It is easy to get confused once units go off-road.

The scenarios are fun to play and bring signficant teaching value. I was in the midst of Sears' "Chancellorsville" when the game came out so it was great to be able to "go there" almost in real time.

Bottom-line is that it would be a must have for the FG if for no other reason than to relive the glory of Jackson's attack on the Eleventh Corps! Laughing

Okay, I bought it.

Let's just say it's a present from New Baby Brendan. He bought it for me, ya know, because it works that way, right??

Yeah, but Jackson had connection issues too, and dropped that game IIR. Too bad, it was going well for his team before that.

These are excellent maps. Playing HITS it becomes obvious why the battles fought in those woods were so disjointed. I've played a number of SP battles where I thought I was in a position to do great damage to the enemy, only to have have him bring up an unseen force on my flank and destroy my command.

There are large sections of missing roads on some of the maps, though not quite as bad as the Antietam maps, but if you use the Hits&Couriers mod, the roads are fully functional.

IMHO, the Chancellorsville maps are really ugly.

Something about the ground color is off-putting to me.

The trees and ground are incredibly ugly.

Stuff on it doesn't work - quite appaling releasing something like that and calling it a product.

I like it. It's a real confusing morass of a game -- insofar as I have played.

There are several spots on the map I could use for battles. However, I agree the price point is a bit steep, likely due to Matrix taking their cut. I hope NSD does well with sales and is able to reinvest some of those profits into further improvements. I love NSD!

I hope more of you will get the game soon. I'd like to try some MP on it sometime. For now, i do not intend to incorporate it into the new campaign until more folks have it.

Install went smoothly too, a bonus.

Strange how different folks see the same product. I think they are beautiful maps. While the ground textures could be better I wouldn't say they were ugly. The Wilderness portions though do suffer from a lack of ground cover, grasses, underbrush, saplings and the like which would be prevalent. The baldness of the ground in the woods is the main problem but covering the whole map in the equivalent of crops like some areas of the Gettysburg maps would do a lot of harm to frame rates probably.

I did note many mistakes with the placing of buildings, and like the Gettysburg maps the placing of the railroad track sections is horrible. NSD need to find a new means of representing or laying RR track!
